  • He and his family suffered from physical abuse brought on by their father.
  • By age 10 he was sexually abused by his father, a male nurse in a hospital, a church member and his friends mother.
  • At age 16, Perry moved out of his house and changed his name to Tyler from his birth name Emmitt.
  • Perry moved in with his aunt who he says "rescued" him.
  • The character of Madea is based on his aunt.
  •  Signifies the classic "mammy stereotype" (mammy in drag) by her actions and how she responds to children and protecting her household.
